Whitetail Deer Skinning
Although not very common among whitetail deer hunters, skinning can be done with no problems at all. If you plan on skinning a deer you must know that this method shouldn’t be used if you plan on mounting the animal. If you are interested in this subject keep reading as we will offer you 8 steps that should be followed in order to skin the deer properly.
The first step - you must hang the animal by its head or antlers from a strong tree limb or skinning rack. Make sure that the rope you will be using is very strong (a nylon rope with 1000-pound test strength is highly recommended as it is durable and works perfectly).
The second step - if you don’t plan on mounting the animal, you should make an incision as high on the neck as possible and ring the neck completely. Don’t forget that this technique shouldn’t be used if you plan on mounting the deer.
The third step - begin the third step by cutting the skin in a straight line from the neck incision down the front of the neck to the brisket, where you have opened the intestinal cavity to gut the deer.
The fourth step - after completing the previous step, you must cut around the knee joint on all four legs. From these incisions, cut the skin down the inside of the leg again to the opening you made to gut the deer.
The fifth step - you must return to the cut that you made around the neck and start peeling the skin down the neck by pulling or trimming using your knife.
The sixth step - this is a delicate step so be patient and take things nice and easy. What you need to do is to remove the skin on the neck just enough so that you can place a rock/small block of wood against the hair side of the skin and fold the skin around the object. A golf ball is highly recommended for this procedure, if you don’t have one, use the above mentioned objects. Again, use a strong and durable rope to tie the skin around the object tightly.
The seventh step - you must tie the other end of the rope from the neck to the bumper or trailer hitch on your car.
The final step - you must now move the vehicle slowly to tighten the rope and pull the hide off the animal. The pulling won’t harm the meat and won’t leave any hair on the deer.
All things considered, skinning a deer/whitetail deer isn’t a very hard thing to do but you must take things nice and easy, patience is the key word in the entire procedure. Read the steps over and over again until you will know what you have to do. Of course, if this isn’t a cup of tea, you can always call in a professional but he will charge you for this job.
